How I Valentine’s

This is how I feel everyday.

Happy Valentine’s Day FabNerds! Hope you are all enjoying the magic of Feb 14 that I have waxed poetic on several times in the two years this blog has been around. In case you’ve missed it, here’s a quick recap of my thoughts on the holiday:

Valentine’s Day is awesome. It is not just a day for couples and commercialism (though what’s so bad about that, really?) it’s about remembering to be kind to those around you and treat everyone with love. And it’s about wearing lots of pink and red.

So without another V-Day Tirade I thought I’d share a little bit about some of the ways I have enjoyed today in chronological order…

2:03 AM: In the early hours of Valentine’s Day I finally finished Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter – a book that I have been reading off and on since May. It’s a scrumptious read and the only reason it took me so long to get through was because each chapter is like a full three-course meal and you need to break for a few weeks before indulging again. I don’t want to give anything away, but the last chapter opens with this epic, subversive, valentine that I think was a perfect start to the day.

10:00 AM: Time to get all pink and red out! This year it was a pink lace blazer with my “Love Conquers Hate” (in Russian) protest tee. This is the only time of year where my wardrobe is not considered totally tacky. Or is at least is encouraged to be tacky.

11:42 AM: I texted everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day (separately, of course) including my brother who sent me a very sweet message back.

2:00 PM: Went out to lunch with former Valentine’s-Hater friend. We went to a little Italian bakery and if my enthusiasm for 2-14-14 didn’t change her mind, these cookies certainly did.

4:35 PM: Because this day is not just about me, I donated a Valentine’s Day meal to a person in need via God’s Love We Deliver – an organization that makes and delivers meals to people living HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses in New York City. $10 provided a full dinner plus two Valentine’s-themed desserts. Very lovely.

5:00 PM: Hey! I’m not heartless! I like to indulge in the occasional couple-y romantic V-Day fare too. This included crying of Google’s homepage and my love of Ira Glass and watching this beautiful version of “Ten Minutes Ago” from Roger’s And Hammerstein’s Cinderella.

7:12 PM: I started to write this blog post, a process which included to my annual google -image search of Valen-pics like this one…

8:30 PM: I’m jumping a bit into my future, but after posting this I’m planning to bake little heart-shaped cakes for some of my nearest and dearest. They will probably not look like this, but let’s stay optimistic.

And that’s my day! Hope your Valentine’s was just a delightful FabNerds. And if it wasn’t, you still have four hours to make it wonderful!

Love the Love,

Jess

Catching Up With Exclamation!

Let’s Stay Informed, Shall We?

FAB NERDS! It’s been months since we’ve last seen each other. I know, I know. But listen: this summer is going to be different. You are going to get some stellar N&F posts EVERY Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We are gonna make up for lost time, I promise. So before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s play a little catch up. Here are the 10 Big Things that were happened in my life since I last updated this little blog.

1. I Was In A Play!

I am not really playing this violin.

I am not really playing this violin.

True facts! I was in a play called Kafka:Divided at Purchase. It was more or less an adaptation of Kafka’s Metamorphosis. I played the Sister and I danced with a violin. I wish this picture wasn’t so small, but it was in a small theatre, so I guess that’s approriate.

2. My Senior Project Got Approved!

I KNOW!!!

Yo! Remember how all I talked about for a while was writing my senior project proposal and presenting my project in front of the Board? Well I did. And I’m approved! That’s right, I will be directing Babble at The Underground Theatre at SUNY Purchase College in March! More on that in the coming months. For now, let’s just smile. 🙂

3. I FINALLY Saw Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella on Broadway!

I’ve been following this show since I found out Santino Fontana from Submissions Only would play Prince Charming. I’m a little bit obsessed. As soon as I had my final week under control, my friend  and I booked it over to the Broadway Theatre for Rush Tickets and watched the magic.

For more magic with the cast you can watch Ella’s Laura Osnes on her Broadway.Com Video Blog or watch this adorable video from The Times which has my favorite song in all Rogers and Hammerstein.

4. I Finished My Junior Year of College!

RIGHT?!?!

5. SMASH was Canceled!

I just want to thank you all for your kind words this time of need. As you know, SMASH and I were very close. We all knew the end was coming, but I was hoping that after Karen and Ivy’s duet  at the Bombshell opening we’d have at least one more season, but that’s life, right?

But it’s important to remember the good things about the ones we’ve lost, so if anyone has some good Ivy/Derek fan fiction or some Jimmy in Jail fan art, please send it my way. I will be waiting with baited breath, but until then let’s end this section the way SMASH intended…

6. Princess: Long Island Premiered!

And it is amazing.

7. I Bought New Hats!

I was busy during my hiatus, I promise, but I also bought this hat and I think it’s really cool. Here I am wearing it at a Father’s Day Brunch with my dad and brother.

FabNerds, Don't tell my brother he's on here, ok?

8. I Worked on A Middle School Production of Grease!

True. I choreographed a bit, but mainly I designed their lights. I won’t show any video, because of the whole “videos of minors” thing. So here’s a video of a Korean Production of the High School Hit.

9. I Made Ticket Stub Art!

If you follow me on Instagram (@TheFabJessGoing) you might see these pop up occasionally. I one of my summer jobs involves working at a movie theater and sometimes it’s dead and I’m bored and the only friends I have are ticket stubs.

10. I Met LC!

So, I’ve never read any of reality star turned fashion guru, Lauren Conrad’s novels (that she writes herself!) but I do think her website is wonderful. And when I heard she was doing a book signing near me TODAY, well, I just had to go. Here’s a pic.

We talked about the horrible rain she drove in to get there. Her make-up was Fabulous.

…sooo. That’s all I’ve been doing the last few weeks. I’ll see you on Wednesday with a new post.

Stay Cool,

Jess
